I tutor my neighbor in all subjects. Shes in 6th grade. On our first session we went through her order of operations homework b/c she didnt understand it very well. I think she understands it better now but when her mom got home i think she was expecting me to actually prepare and teach her osmething not just go through homework. what should i do? oh and also what should i do when it comes to reading comprehension? thank yOU!!!!!!
First time tutor--what to do?
For reading comprehension just pick up some interesting books at her grade level. i reccomend the cirque du freak series. i've read them at 6th grade if i can remember correctly, but tell her to write down ALL vocabulary words she doesn't know on a piece of paper and which page/paragraph she got the words from and start working from there... i'd say working with vocab.. even though its tedious... but better comprehension comes from better understanding of the whole sentence. if she can't understand like around 6 words per chapter then the book is okay if its more than 15 then pick a easier book if, if less than 3 then pick a harder one.
when she gets the vocab, start from the easiest word on of the list, some word like.. tedious from the paragraph above. go back to the sentence that the word was in and give her clues from the sentence. ex. The teacher told the students to read a -tedious- book about photosynthsis that was 500 pages long. you can tell her to use her own words instead of the word tedious and see if it helps. i don't really know, im still a student but so far it has help for me and i think it will for her.
dont mind my grammar/spelling i did this in a rush
Reply:first-off you need to talk with your student's parents(if both available) and learn what is expected.
for reading comprehension get a book of short stories and then quiz her on the story she read and see how well she understands.
by the way miss tutor check your spelling, okay
Reply:do her homework with her.
bring a snack for the 2 of you to share.
bring some drinks and cups! :]
just be patient and clarify things for her.
thats what your JOB is, after all!
good luck!
Reply:Well, explain to her mom that a tutor helps a student to understand what they are doing now (homework and classwork), not what they will be doing. It's much more practical to go over what a student is learning at that point in time than to get ahead of the class and teach them something else (which may not be on the upcoming test or you could end up confusing her...what if you teach her a math problem one way but the teacher wants it done another way?). She needs to get a good grasp on what's happening now if she is to understand what will be taught in the future.
Does she get papers that she has to read and questions to answer at the end for reading comprehension? If so, then you just need to be able to explain why an answer is what it is. If not, then go with what JJ said.
Reply:check this link its good

Reply:You need to clarify with the girl's mother exactly what she wants you to be doing while 'tutoring.' her child.
